Next Concert: Jordi Savall
Houston Early Music and Da Camera of Houston present Jordi Savall in The Route to the New World: Spain to Mexico Houston Early Music and Da Camera of Houston join forces in a magnificent season opener, as they launch the long-awaited Houston debut of Jordi Savall, world-recognized icon of early music. In a brilliant and significant collaboration, Savall and long-time music partner and wife, soprano Montserrat Figueras, integrate their own renowned Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya with Mexico’s Tembembe Ensamble Continuo. On Saturday, October 2nd at 7:30 p.m., the Cullen Theater stage at Wortham Theater Center comes alive with a dramatic and historical tale reflecting African, Spanish and native influences on Mexican music. This event showcases a celebratory masterpiece honoring the 200th year of Mexican Independence. As described by Savall, The Route to the New World: Spain to Mexico is a culmination of many years of research, providing authenticity to the traditional songs in their native languages. “This project we are presenting is a musical project reflecting the very nice result of the meeting of the two cultures – Spain and the New World. It is especially interesting because we combine the Spanish group and Mexican group. It’s very beautiful to see how, combined together, we are celebrating one of the best results of this discovering of the New World. Music is one of the best things we have going in melting of the cultures.” Audiences will glean from this historical performance its beauty and “to be open to new things and surprised at how beautiful things exist in the music world,” said Savall. Houston Early Music supports its Hispanic Heritage Series as it joins Da Camera of Houston with this magnificent celebratory concert on Saturday, October 2, 7:30 p.m. at Cullen Theater in Wortham Theater Center.
