The Boston ensemble is back with music by women composers at the rival German courts of Frederic the Great and the House of Hapsburg. Foes on the battlefield, the zeal for victory extended to the salon, where passions ran high and nothing was spared in their lavish quest of the arts. Music by Frederic’s sister, Wilhelmine, and Anna Bon goes up against Hapsburg-sponsored Camilla de Rossi and Maria Teresa Agnesi. Soprano Shari Alise Wilson and countertenor Gerrod Pagenkopf. Violins, viola, violone, harpsichord and viola da gamba.

Dear Friends of Houston Early Music,

Among the many compliments we keep hearing from you is that no other organization presents the groups and music that we consistently bring to Houston from all over the country and all over the world. As a patron said at our last concert, “you can’t hear this kind of music anywhere else in Houston.” Not only do we bring these groups to you at our concerts, we continue our educational outreach in the community, bringing the groups to underprivileged children as well as providing master classes to local college students. We have every right to be proud of the organization, and are hopeful that more patrons of the arts will hear of our world-class concerts and artists and spread the word, especially during these economically challenging times.

We need the financial support of local early music enthusiasts and friends of the organization in order to continue our over 40-year history of bringing exceptional music to Houston and to eventually return to six concerts per season, beginning with five concerts next season. As such, please consider making a contribution to the organization now, so that we may realize the planned five-concert season in 2011-2012, despite the expected reduction in state arts funding. Please remember that your contribution is tax deductible, and that we are a mostly volunteer-run non-profit, with our expenses being primarily artists’ fees.

The 2011-2012 season will be formally announced at our next concert on May 2nd, but here is a preview: the five concerts will include La Donna Musicale, returning to Houston with a new German program, the Dufay Collective, who will help us “Drive the Cold Winter Away,” the returning internationally acclaimed harpsichordist Richard Egarr in a new program, La Morra in a Spanish Renaissance program, and Trio Settecento with a Scottish Baroque program. As always, these concerts promise to be varied, exciting, and unique.

Thank you for your consideration of this special request. Please send checks (made out to Houston Early Music) to Houston Early Music, P.O.Box 271193, Houston, TX 77277-1193, or make your donation online through our website (http://www.houstonearlymusic.org/), to reflect your support of the organization. Thank you again.

Sincerely yours,

Magali Suárez Candler
President, Board of Directors

Houston Early Music’s season finale celebrates Tudor King Henry VIII

The Flanders Recorder Quartet will be featured at the Houston Early Music season finale concert on Monday, May 2, 2011. The concert will be held 7:30 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 1015 Holman Street, Houston, TX 77004.

Founded in 1987, the Flanders Recorder Quartet has performed more than 1,500 concerts on five continents. Members of the group are recorder players Bart Spanhove, Tom Beets, Joris Van Goethem and Paul Van Loey.

The quartet will be joined by guest vocalist Cecile Kempenaers, a leading early-music soprano in Belgium who specializes in Renaissance and Baroque music.

The mixed ensemble of recorder quartet and vocalist will bring to the stage a program celebrating a famous Tudor king. The evening’s program, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, includes contemporary music by award-winning Belgian composer Piet Swert, as well as medieval and improvised music, a scene from Shakespeare, letters from King Henry and Anne Boleyn and original verse written specifically for this project.

“This program is a fascinating telling of a familiar story,” Houston Early Music artistic director, Nancy Ellis, said. “Our season finale honors a king who was actually an accomplished musician.”

Dr. Thomas Crow, associate professor of British history St. Thomas University, will offer a pre-concert lecture at 6:45 p.m. He also serves as a program chair of the music department at the University.

Crow said Henry VIII played the lute, composed and sang. He also was supportive of the arts in his court. Prior to his reign, the court had only five permanent musicians. Henry VIII dramatically increased that number to about 58.

“The music reflects the general splendor of the court,” Crow said. “England was just feeling the effects of the Renaissance, and there was a blossoming of all the arts.”

Crow said the sequence of queens reflected the king’s personality. “He was impulsive and acted without thinking,” Crow explained.

The success of the Tudor dynasty was a hot topic in Henry VIII’s court, Crow added. “It was on everyone’s mind — whether or not the dynasty would survive.”

Exploring history through music is a Houston Early Music specialty. The group follows music from the Middle Ages through the 18th century, providing unique programming and world-class concerts performed with historical instruments and styles true to the period. Houston Early Music is one of the nation’s oldest early-music organizations.

Trio Sonnerie will be featured at the next Houston Early Music concert on Monday, March 28, 2011. Entitled The Harmony of Nations, the performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church, 6221 Main Street, Houston, TX 77030.

The concert will feature English violinist and conductor, Monica Huggett, one of the foremost Baroque violinists and founder of Trio Sonnerie. Joining Huggett are Emilia Benjamin on viola da gamba and James Johnstone on harpsichord.

The trio will bring to the stage a contrasting program, including one of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s Mystery Sonatas for virtuoso violin, as well as French music for viola da gamba, tunes from Jacobean England and a sonata for violin and harpsichord by J.S. Bach.

“We have featured the remarkable Monica Huggett before,” said Nancy Ellis, artistic director of Houston Early Music. “It is a pleasure to welcome this extraordinary violinist back to Houston. She’s a favorite with Houston Early Music audiences.”

Dr. Gregory Barnett, associate professor of musicology at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, will offer a pre-concert lecture at 6:45 p.m. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Houston Early Music.

Barnett said Huggett’s performances are exceptional. “She has an amazing bow technique,” he said. “She has the quickest and most nuanced sound.”

Barnett explained that Biber’s Mystery Sonatas are difficult to perform. “It’s been years since I’ve seen anyone take on the Mystery Sonatas,” he said. “Biber wrote the hardest music for violin. It’s very difficult and wickedly fast.”

Barnett believes Huggett will rise to the challenge. “This is just made for Monica’s bow technique. It’s so quick and so intricate. She can get all of the colors and all of the rhythms,” he said.

Barnett said the scheduled performance is indicative of Houston Early Music’s dedication to providing Houston audiences with some of today’s best musicians.

“Houston Early Music always gets top-notch performers, and that’s not easy to do,” he said. “Nancy has been able to identify excellent and current players in the early-music scene. Houston Early Music represents the best there is out there.”

Trio Sonnerie, Monica Huggett’s longest running and smallest group, comes from the UK to present the choicest pick of Europe’s chamber music from the Baroque period. Biber’s astonishing “Mystery Sonatas” for virtuoso violin contrast with exquisitely refined French music for viola da gamba and sprightly tunes from Jacobean England. Of course, the Harmony of Nations wouldn’t be complete without JS Bach, here represented by a magnificent sonata for violin and harpsichord.

For our Christmas offering, we present the exciting young American ensemble in a concert of carols, hymns, lullabies and instrumental pieces from Renaissance England, France, Spain, Italy and Germany. Featuring the talents some of the foremost early musicians performing works from humble pipers’ tunes to grand Renaissance polyphony with voices, shawms, sackbut, recorders, and bagpipes.

Houston Early Music presents a Renaissance musicale that is a must-see holiday event for Houston audiences. On Monday evening, December 13, Christ Church Cathedral will resonate with enchanting sounds and the musical imagery of early Christmas when world-acclaimed ensemble Ciaramella takes the stage.

Ciaramella’s name is derived from both the Italian shawm and a 15th-century song – When she opens her mouth, she knocks men flat – about a beautiful girl whose clothes are full of holes. This ensemble will truly do just that, as the rich and intricate counterpoint of A Piper’s Noël captivates the hearts of all who hear. The work brings forth the great tradition of combined bagpipes and shawm (early oboe), as well as early representations of modern instruments that include flute (recorder), bassoon (dulcian), trumpet (slide trumpet), and trombone (sackbut).

Adam Gilbert, co-founder of Ciaramella, says of this work, “Its inspiration is derived from the representation of angels announcing the birth of Christ. We see the bagpiper, or shepherd, so amazed at the angels that he puts down the bagpipe made of goat or sheepskin. This represents the putting away of carnal cares. These rustic instruments were used throughout the Baroque era, as heard in themes from Handel’s The Messiah.”

Ciaramella brings to life Renaissance classics with the ease of jazz musicians improvising on a theme, revealing the origins of carols we know and introducing forgotten popular gems. With the addition of four male voices, Ciaramella blends traditional dance melodies with added embellishment and improvisation, classical motets, and popular tunes. The focus is authentic music that will range from toe-tapping to cerebral to five-hundred years of jazz.

Ensemble members are Adam Gilbert, Rotem Gilbert, Debra Nagy, Doug Milliken, Greg Ingles, and Erik Schmaltz. This year they plan to record A Piper’s Noël, as well as a collection of traditional and improvised Spanish dances. More information about this exciting group can be found atwww.ciaramella.org.

You do not want to miss this performance that begins at 7:30 p.m., with a 6:45 p.m. pre-concert lecture by Adam Gilbert. The performance takes place at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave. (77002).
